MOUNT PLEASANT — The only state Department of Motor Vehicles office east of the Cooper River is expected to move in 2023 to a yet-to-be-determined location in the city.

The Mount Pleasant DMV office is owned by Charleston County, located on Sweetgrass Basket Parkway in the Isle of Palms Connector, and serves the county.

Residents who need to visit the county auditor or treasurer's office can visit the service center instead of driving to the Charleston peninsula. The building houses the state's Office of Health and Environmental Control and other state services.

As the state's fourth largest municipality, the Mount Pleasant DMV is a convenient place to get driver's licenses and other services for residents of Awendau, Daniel Island, Palm Island and Sullivan's Island.

It's a busy office that saw 126,139 clients last fiscal year, according to the state. The DMV rents the 1,760-square-foot facility for $42,278 annually, according to the county.

"Our current lease expires at the end of the calendar year with the state," Phillips said. "The county has told us it would like to use this space for additional county offices, but is willing to work with the DMV as needed to bridge the gap between any potential delays in service."

Charleston County spokeswoman Kelsey Barlow said the DMV wanted more space in the county building, but that was not available, so the county also needs more space.

"The DMV requested space. Charleston County did not respond to that request because we do not have more space to provide this service center," he said. "We're working with the DMV so they can expand and stay in their current space if needed."

Earlier this year, the DMV submitted a request for new office space in East Cooper County, but "the response did not match their facility needs," said Matt McCall, a spokesman for the state's Department of Administration.

He said the state has hired real estate firm CBRE to look for additional potential sites, and the DMV is identifying "several candidates."
