BREMERTON — The Kitsap Crisis Triage Center has taken in 88 people with behavioral crises since it opened in mid-August, according to Kitsap Mental Health Services, which operates the county-owned facility.

The Fuson Road Center serves adults who do not meet the criteria for involuntary commitment but need a safe place to relax and receive support. Kitsap mental health officials said the center helped people struggling with major grief and depression, violent trauma or crimes such as sex trafficking. and other crises related to mental illness or drug use.

Kitsap Mental Health CEO Joe Roszak said the facility diverted people away from more expensive services such as hospital emergency rooms. He recalled one week when the center took in three clients who would otherwise be incarcerated and another client who was committed to inpatient psychiatric treatment.
"We wanted it to happen," Roszak said. “I was amazed at the impact it had.
The 16-bed crisis triage center is a quiet space where clients can stay for up to five days and receive volunteer care. Law enforcement agencies, emergency medical personnel, hospital staff and behavioral health professionals call the center.
The facility was 40 percent full last week, but occupancy increased in September and October as referral agencies became familiar with the program. Staff hope to have the center up and running at full capacity by January.

"Usage has really increased in the last month, which is what we expected," said Rochelle Doan, Kitsap Mental Health.
According to the 61 people who served at the distribution center since September 13. by the October 22 sample, about a third of clients were homeless and half were covered by Medicaid. About 80% of triage center clients were enrolled in continuing mental health services after leaving the triage center, and 40% were enrolled in physical health. Clients stayed at the triage center for an average of 3.6 days.
Pacific Hope and Recovery Center, a 16-bed substance abuse treatment facility adjacent to the triage center, was also occupied. The center, which treats adults struggling with mental illness and drug or alcohol abuse, has so far enrolled 29 clients, half of whom have completed the full 30-day program.
Finding accessible and affordable housing for people released from institutions remains a challenge. Kitsap Mental Health partners with the Kitsap Community Resource Housing Solutions Center to house clients.
